Translation Workshop: Lecture by Tetiana Khmil

On December 11, 2024, as part of the “Translation Workshop” organized by the Department of Slavic Languages, a meeting was held with the editorial team of the publishing house “Apostol” and expert in religious translation, Tetiana Khmil. Ms. Khmil shared her journey to becoming a translator and the importance of philological education in the modern intercultural space. The translator introduced the students to the specifics of religious translation and the value of the work of editors and proofreaders to avoid religious misunderstandings, considering the peculiarities of the field. In such translation, the coordinated work of the entire publishing team is crucial: translators, proofreaders, literary editors, and theological editors. Using examples from several books, students had the opportunity to analyze translation challenges, particularly in translating book titles of works planned for future publication, suggesting their own translation options. At the end, Ms. Khmil gave advice to students on how to find their way in translation studies: where to start, how to find work, how to develop, and what constitutes a good translation. We thank her for the warm meeting and look forward to the book presentations at our Faculty.
